Today a group of us went down to the garden. Jah and Ashton taught the others to mix the ingredients to make a special food to feed the plants. We taught them how to water the plants. We gave the plants 3 squirts each so we don't over water them. Our plants are growing well and getting really big.
On Wednesday the Beans group went down to our new gardens. We planted beans and much more. We made a bean rack from bamboo and string so the beans can wrap around the string and climb up the rack. We planted celery, rosemary, mint, marjoram, chives, corn, broad beans and beans. The first four are in ponga pots. The borage and the marigolds are there to encourage the bees to come to our garden. Ashton and Jah got to build the bean rack and the girls planted most of the plants.
This is what our garden looked like on the last day of term. Our vegetables are growing well.
These are our first plants that have popped up. Two are carrots and the other two are beetroot. It was one week before we saw our first plants.
Planting our Beans
First we had to put tape on the bottom of the toilet roll so the dirt will not fall out.
Next we put the soil into the top of the toilet roll.
We had to get a stabber to stab a hole and whirl it around to make a hole.
We got a bean and popped it in the hole so that the top of the seed is facing up .
We got a small rake and raked the dirt over the seeds and then flattened it down.
We squirted water on top to give them a drink to help them grow.
We brought them back to Space 14 to grow until they are bigger.
We give them water when the soil is looking dry. Our first bean has just sprouted.
We planted carrots, spinach and beetroot straight into the garden. We used a tiny rake to make a ditch in the dirt. We covered the seeds with the dirt and then we watered them. We used the egg carton to measure where the next row of seeds was going to go so they wouldn't be too close to each other.
First the lettuce and the spring onion people put a strip of material in the bottom of the container. We put soil in the container and then planted the seeds. We put snail and slug pellets on top so the slugs won"t eat the plants. We cut open the side of the milk bottle off and put the seed container inside. We put water in the lid. The material hanging over the edge soaks up the water it needs. Now we have got little sprouts coming up.
